Winter 2014/2015

December 28th - Ice Storm Pictures

Here are some pictures of the Christmas Day Ice Storm. It rained all Christmas Day, causing ice buildup on everything. There was probably an inch of ice accumulation on the roads and of course the powerlines and sub stations were hit hard causing widespread outages across the state. The main ranch was without power for 24 hours and portions of the ranch were without for 72 hours. We are thankful for generators and the linemen who worked tirelessly to restore our power! While we had a couple days in the 20s following the storm, much of the ice still remains on the gravel roads, roads around the ranch, and fences. With temperatures in the subzero highs forecasted for the upcoming weeks we will probably be dealing with the ice for quite some time!

This storm reminded us of God's power and beauty.

December 25th - Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from our ranch to yours!

We are experincing a winter ice storm! It rained all day today, YES rained in Leola South Dakota on Christmas. Tonight we are expecting some snow, wind and blizzard conditions.

Here at the ranch we are enjoying the Christmas day with family and friends!

Pictures of the Winter Storm to follow!

December 17th - A little chilly!

We're known for having terrible weather during scheduled ranch events. Bieber brandings, sales and apparently Christmas parties no matter when they are scheduled seen to attract poor weather. Today we held our annual Christmas party at the Elm Lake Resort north of Leola by Fredrick, South Dakota. We had a great time but the weather Saturday night was especially terrible. We had actual temperatures of -37 degrees F!

We did get a bit of snow last night but it was less than forecasted, all of the cattle came through the weather fine. The guys were quite warm though on Sunday morning during chores after chopping the layers of ice off of all the water tanks!

December 14th - Moving cows closer to home

With a severe winter storm forecasted for our area this weekend, we took this chilly but nice day to move our spring calving cows off of pasture and closer to the ranch!

After we got done moving this bunch we headed the spring calving heifers back to the ranch. The heifers are due to start calving in mid-January. We led the bunch with the feedtruck and walked them down the highway. We used vehicles to slow traffic ahead of and behind the bunch. We got them home just as the sun was headed down!

We wish all of our customers and friends a very merry holiday season!

December 10th - Walking the Summer cows home

Today we walked the summer calving cows 9 miles south to cornstalks closer to the ranch from our Meier unit in Long Lake, South Dakota. It was a cold but beautiful day!

December 8th - Winter has arrived
Ranch Updates

Winter has arrived here in South Dakota. We've had a couple snow storms in this past week that has given us a few inches of snow and taken our temperatures out of the mid 30s - occasional 40s to the teens. We are happy to have had the mild weather for so long, and that it looks like we will have plenty of snow for a white Christmas here!

All of our cattle are still out on pasture. There are some shelter belts in the pastures that they are currently in, but if the snow gets deeper we will have to walk them closer to home, to make them easier to get to for when we have to start feeding them some.

Prior to the winter storms we bedded the bulls in the feedlot for the first time this winter.

December 2nd - Working Barn Update
Ranch Updates

Work has continued on our new working facility, here's an update of the progress!

Outside in the pen/sorting system and alleys all of the corner posts are in the ground and the continuous fence will be welded on soon along with the gates.

Inside the building the insulation when into the attic space and into the walls of the interior rooms. The interior space will be finished into a sterile lab for future flushing/IVF work here on the ranch, a tack/work room, and a bathroom.

November 24th - Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving from our ranch to yours!

We enjoyed the day filled with family, friends and of course delicious food!
